THE TERNS

YOUNG GUNS READY FOR THE BIG SCENE

With its 1,000+ islands, turquoise sea, fair winds and over 300 regattas every year, Croatia has positioned itself as one of the most attractive sailing destinations in the world. Hailing from a nation that brings together some of the top sporting talents in the world, with sailing as no exception, Croatia is ready for the big scene, and the SSL Gold Cup will be its stage for the very first time all of Croatian sailing superstars will sail together onboard the same vessel. After incredible success on the Olympic circuit, the golden generation wants to prove themselves in monohull racing.
The ‘Croatian sailing dream team’ is a good mixture of Olympic medalists with championship hardware, experienced sailors in the big boats like RC44, TP52, ClubSwan, Wally and highly motivated young guys. This fellowship is on a mission to create a platform of excellence that inspires the next generation of Croatian sailors. With raw talent, good sailing skills and its famous Croatian team spirit, ‘The Chequered sails’ are ready to challenge the best at the SSL Gold Cup. Just remember the FIFA World Cup in Russia…

With titles in the 470 and 49er class, Šime Fantela joined an elite group of sailing greats that include the Brazilian Robert Scheidt, Brit Ben Ainslie and Swede Fredrik Lööf, who all won gold World Championship medals in different Olympic classes.

The captain

ŠIME FANTELA

Born and raised in Zadar, Šime was used to spending time on a boat before he could even walk. He began sailing when he was six and won his first medal at the age of twelve. This serial winner conquered the sailing world with Igor Marenić in the 470 class, and after golden samba in Rio, he began a new campaign in the 49er class with his brother Miho. In addition to competing in Olympic classes, he has also sailed in the TP52 and Wally class. His winning instinct and huge sailing knowledge make him an ideal captain.

THE LEADERS

Tonči Stipanović

Cool like ice, Tonči Stipanović from the most sporting city in the world, won the first Croatian Olympic medal in sailing. Split’s true master of wind took silver from Rio in Laser class, but his second love is a Star boat. With Tonči at the helm and Šime as tactician, the Croatian boat will be dynamite.

Igor Marenić

Šime’s ‘sailing brother’ Igor Marenić had an impressive collection of medals from the 470 class. The dynamic duo created history when they claimed Croatia’s first-ever Olympic sailing gold medal in 2016. The three-time Olympian began a new sailing life after Rio; Igor’s new projects include the Nacra 17 and ClubSwan regattas. His surgical precision is vital for his position onboard.

Pave Pleslić

Pave Pleslić has competed on a variety of big boats in his sailing career and won medals in the most famous world regattas; the professional World Match Race tour and World and European championships in various classes, including maxi sailboats. He also has vast experience in RC44 boats as a member of Cro-a-sail team. ‘Pitman’ is his ‘middle’ name.

THE LEADERSTHE LEADERS

THE YOUTH FACTOR

Mihovil Fantela, Filip Jurišić, Josip Olujić are three young lions ready to compete at the highest level of sailing. Mihovil has been making waves in the 49er, RS:X and Optimist classes since following his big brother Šime into the sport. Energetic and daring Filip, from Hvar island, is a rising star in Laser class and he has the biggest smile on Earth. On the other hand, Finn sailor Josip is raw Croatian power. Strong as a bull and solid as Dalmatian rock.
